New Personal Career Records Reached

Two of our four year starters, Kurt and Cody Stephens, have made an impact on the Career Records standings. The Career and Individual Records, displayed on the Historical Records web page, will not be updated for a while. I usually get to them by mid summer.

It typically takes 4 years of steady varsity starting to make an impact on our Career Records. That is what Kurt and Cody have achieved in their 4 years at Saint.

Kurt Stephens has broken the #1 career pin record set by Drew Forshey in 2003. He passed Jonathan Troutman's 2nd place record set in 2005 for the most team points. He also passed Jonathan Troutman's 2nd place record set in 2005 for the most wins. Kurt moved into 7th place in takedowns, passing Josh Triplett's record set in 2002.

Cody Stephens moved ahead of the 11th placed pin record of Brandon Sisk set in 2003. He passed Travis Paaps 5th place 2008 record for team points. He also passsed Travis Paap's 7th place record for most wins. Cody moved into 9th place over Adam Hoffman's 2001 record for career takedowns.

Congratulations to Kurt and Cody on their record achieving career.
Our thanks go out to Stephens family for their four boys and
12 years of varsity effort for Saint Wrestling.
Chad Stephens, Kyle Stephens, Kurt Stephens, and Cody Stephens.

Saint Places 2nd at Cary

MOW - Cody Stephens @ 125 lb

St. Stephens should be proud of an outstanding performance by the entire team at the Sgt. Adams Memorial Tournament. Nine wrestlers placed in the top six in this tounament. The team finish in second behind the home team Cary. We finished ahead of West Lincoln, who took third. "Lesson still learned."

Cody Stephens was voted the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament with a 5-4 decision over Ben Creed of Cary in the 125 lb final. Cody was behind 3-4 and scrambled for a reversal to clinch the win.

Saint had 3 champions: Ray Farnsworth @ 112, Cody Stephens @ 125, and Kurt Stephens @ 130.

12-15-2009

Saint 67 Maiden 9

Saint rolled on the night against Maiden with 7 pins and two techfalls.

The highlight match of the evening was with the big boys at 285. Our freshman Blake Gutberlet was in a tight match up to the waning moments of the third period. Blake as ahead after the 2nd period 3-0 with and escape and a takedown. Maiden's heavyweight took down in the third and quickly scored and escape to tighten the score 3-1.

Now is when the excitement begins. Blake scores a takedown to go 5-1, but Maiden reverses Blake to pull to 5-3. You know how heavy weight matches go. First "mid-section" on top will seal the match. Blake is down with Maiden pressuring the half nelson and time running down. Blake hits a scrambling roll that sends Maiden to his hip. Blake sees his opportunity and crashed this mid-section down on his opponent for a reversal and locks in a 3point nearfall to finish the match. Great Job by Blake to finish the match. Great Job by Heavy Weight Coach Eric Isenhour teaching and demonstrating how to crash down the "mid-section".

Pinning for the Tribe were:
Bradley Bader @ 112 in 1:29
Evan Payne @ 119 in 3:19
Cody Stephens @ 125 in 0:22

A young Tribe of wrestler took to the mat this weekend at Morehead HS this weekend. We came out of the tournament in 10th place with 88.5 points. Six of our wrestlers placed in the tournament. There were 19 high schools represented at this tournament.

The top placers for the Tribe were Ray Farnsworth taking 1st at 112 and Hunter Schronce finishing in 2nd at 125.

Hunter Schronce, in his first ever varsity tournament, advance through the first two rounds with a major decision and a decision. He SHOCKED the crowd in the semifinal match with a third period pin over the number one seed in his weight class. His Dad wanted to run out on the mat to hug his son, but could not leave his wife who had passed out and was blocking the bleacher stairway. It was an exciting win for one of our up and coming wrestlers. Hunter lost in the finals to take second.

Evan Payne at 119 placed 5th.

Saint's Next Wave Dominates Over East Burke 55-18

A lot of injuries and sickness has sidelined many of the starting line up wrestler tonight. One other crippling effect on the lineup was a Chorus Hoe Down. We are a sophisticated bunch as you may know.

We had 5 starters out of the line up. What to do? What to do? The Answer: Reload with the Next Wave. Additional underclassmen have been waiting in the wings to join the other first time starters in the line up.The Result: Excellent! Blake Rogers @ 103, Hunter Schronce @ 125, Jonn-Marc Stevenson @ 145 joined the mostly underclassmen line up and came home with a 55-18 win.

We forfeited at 119 to start down in the match 0-6.

Sophomore Hunter Schronce started in his first ever varsity match at 125. It didn’t take but 1:42 for this tightly wound spring to get unsprunged. A quick first take down by Hunter and an over enthusiastic wallowing let his opponent quickly escape.Slow down Hunter! Well that did not happened. Another quick shot by Hyper Hunter. Not only did he score the take down, but took his opponent to his back for a pinning combination. (Yes Mom, he put the legs in. Looks like some experience has paid off). Saint 6 EB 6.

Kurt Stephens kept the momentum going at 130 with a second period pin at 2:46.His opponent did not score a point in the match. Saint 12 EB 6.

Alex Pollard @ 135 was award a forfeit at 135. Saint 18 EB 6.

Ian Martin at 140, part of the Next Wave, washed over his opponent with a pin in 1:00. Saint 24 EB 6

Jonn-Marc Stevenson, a Junior and part of the Next Wave, stepped in at 145. In his 3rd start of the year, Jonn-Marc masterfully wrestled his opponent to a major decision at 15-4. It was a great effort from Jonn-Marc as his control made it look effortless in his win. Great Job. Saint 28 EB 6.

Dillon Lail, first year starter and part of the Next Wave, “drowned” his opponent with three take downs and a 4 point nearfall. It ended in a 12-3 match that gave Dillon a 4 point major decision. Saint 32 EB 6.

Jon Holloway, Next Wave Red Python, techfalled his match with a 17-2 score. Saint 37 EB 6

Saint lost at 171, but it was a gutsy effort by Corey Seabock to last to the second period. Saint 37 EB 12

Dale Huffman, Next Wave 189, pinned his opponent in 3:23. Dale rolled his opponent to a pin after fighting off his own back. I think it was the new high tec head gear Dale was wearing that won the match. The new “look out the back way to see if they are in front of you” head gear. It’s all the new rage in wrestling. Saint 43 EB 12.

Coley Self lost at 215 after getting caught in a quick move by his opponent. Saint 43 EB 18.

There was a double forfeit at 285.

Freshman Blake Rogers took the forfeit at 103 as well as Ray Farnsworth at 112. Saint 55 EB 18.

It was a pleasure watch our newer starters perform at this level. Several of them took advantage of their opportunity to show the Coach Baker that they are ready to go to the next level.

Saint Outlast Ashbrook 41-26

Tonight's match came down to the last three weight classes before the Tribe could close the door on Ashbrook. Winning 8 of the 14 matches, the Tribe just could not pull away from the determined Ashbrook lineup until the end.

Alex Pollard @ 135 started the night in a big way with at major decision of 13-3. Despite the score, this was a scrappy match. Alex found a way to come out on top in the scrambles. Alex executed a masterful high lift to a takedown during the match. His execution excited the crowd. His win got the Tribe off to a good start with a 4 points win.

Ashbrook fought back at 140 to pull out a 5-3 win in the third period. Tribe 4 Ashbrook 3.

Ian Martin @ 145 demonstrated excellent positioning and body control in his match. The score was 0-0 after two exhaustive periods of hard fought attacking and counter-attack wrestling from both wrestlers. Ian took down in the third and scored the matches first point with an escape. Ian quickly scored a take down and executed a tilt for 2 points near fall to go up 5-0 in late in the third period. His opponent scored and escape, but time ran out before a comeback effort could affect the score. Ian won 5-1. This was a solid performance by Ian. Tribe 7 Ashbrook 3.

Ashbrook scored a defensive pin in the next weight class and pushed ahead to a 7-9 lead.

Dillon Lail @ 160 scrambled his way to a 9-5 lead through the second period of his match. After several flurries from both wrestlers in the third, Dillon executed his most lethal take down move and placed his opponent in a pinning combination for the win and the lead to the Tribe. The coaches’ corner knew the move was coming because we read the telegraph. Tribe 13 Ashbrook 9.

Jon Holloway, the "Red Python", at 171, wrapped up his opponent and coiled around him to score numerous times to gain a major decision at 12-2. Some time was needed after the match to uncoil Jon's arms and legs from around his defeated opponent’s body. Tribe 17 Ashbrook 9. Animal Emergency Responders fee $75.00. Please buy more hoodies and t-shirts to support our team.

Dale Huffman and Mason Vanderwork fought two tough matches at 189 and 215. Dale lost 8-13 and fought hard right up to the end. Mason battled to a 8-10 match before getting caught for a pin in the third. Ashbrook goes ahead 17-18.

After the Tribe received a forfeit at 285 and suffered a Tec fall at 103, Ashbrook pulled even with the Tribe 23-23.

The Tribe lost agiain in the 112 match by a 0-1 score. Bradley Bader battled right up to the end, but gave up and escape. It was a great match to watch. Tribe 23 Ashbrook 26.

By this time in the match, our younger least experienced wrestlers have done their job. Keep us close and do not give up many big pins. Ashbrook had won 6 of the match ups so far, Saint with only 5. We were trailing by 3 points.

Ray Farnsworth, our 2009 State Champion, pinned his opponent in 1:08 to put the Tribe ahead in the match with 2 matches to go. Tribe 29 Ashbrook 26.

Senior Evan "Major" Payne quickly pins in 0:31 and seals the win for the Tribe. Tribe 35 Ashbrook 26.

Senior Kurt Stephens was awarded a forfeit to close the scoring at Tribe 41 Ashbrook 26.

It is always a good feeling to have "hammers" waiting in the wings to close out a dual meet. Our 9 first time starters are commended for their efforts to battle hard and keep the match close. Great job by all.

The Tribe is now 9-2 in dual action. The 38th Annual Indian Classic, the longest running tournament in the state, will be this Saturday. Parents, please come and help us in anyway you can on Saturday.

Saint Fall Short at Newton-Conover

Saint dropped a cliff hanger at Newton 36-37. Starting at weight class 140 and all the way to 103, the Tribe failed in 7 of 9 weight classes. Only Gunnar McDowell @152 and Jon Holloway @ 171 were able to break through in the scoring with a pin and a decision. With only five weight classes left in the match, the Tribe was behind 9-37.

The Tribe had to win out big in the last 5 weight classes to save the match. Bradley Bader @ 103 was awarded a forfeit to bring the Tribe closer at 15-37. Ray Farnsworth, Cody Stephens, Kurt Stephens, and Alex Pollard gathered 2 pins and 2 major decisions for the Tribe, but that only gave us a 36-37 lose.

Saint Captures Three Wins at Patton Quad

The night started with a early match brawl with Patton, but finished with the Tribe pulling away big in all three matches. The young Tribe stretched its season opening win streak to 4-0.

Saint 57 Patton 24
The opening match of the night was with Patton at weight class 152. This would mean that Jeff Ellis at 145 would once again draw the last weight class for this match, same as the West Wilkes match from Tuesday night. The quote of the night came from Jeff Ellis, "Is that the only number the Refs can draw?". His concern of it coming down to him again looked possible given the way we started off the match. After the first 6 weight classes, we were trailing 12-24.

Only Gunnar McDowell and Dale Huffman were able to break the ice for the Tribe up through the heavier weight divisions. Patton fans had the momentum going for the Pathers and it looked like they were on a roll against the Tribe.

Our Jesse Hudson at 103 stopped the Patton run with a second period pin and closed the score to 18-24.

Bradley Bader at 112 hammered a quick pin in 0:58 seconds into the match to pull the Tribe even at 24-24.

We travel to Newton-Conover Monday evening to take on the Red Devils. This is always a high intensity match. Your attendance and support is needed to drown out those "Eddie Clark Devil Worshipers" he keeps in the bleachers of Newton. The Red Devils are always loudly supported by their fans and it takes a great effort on and off the mat to come out with a win against Newton. We need your support.

Tribe Escapes the Claws of the Blackhawks

It was an exciting night of wrestling for the Tribe as they traveled to West Wilkes for the season opener. With nine new first time starters in the line up, it was going to be a night of discovery. The match was still up for grabs in the final match of the night. Saint walked out of the gym with a 36-29 win.

Gunnar McDowell started the Tribe off in the right direction with a first period pin at the 1:44 mark after he had already established a commanding 11-4 lead.

Dillion Lail and Jon Holloway increase the lead with back to back major decisions Lail won 13-4 and Holloway won 12-4. Both young men earned their starting rolls after years on of being in back up positions to upper classmen. It was now their shot as a mainstream starter for the Tribe and they supplied the fireworks.

Dillion hit a five point move to start the match and sealed the major decision with another four point move in the second period. He closed the match with a 13-4 score

Jon scored three takedowns and a nearfall three to pull away to a 12-4 major decision win.

Saint lost the next two weight classes by a decision and a pin, but reclaimed six points after the our heavyweight, Blake Gutberlet, was awarded a forfeit.

Freshman Blake Rogers stepped into the mat for his first varsity match of his life. At 98 pounds of twisted steel, Rogers exploded on the mat with a 12 second pin of his opponent. (Tribe 26 Blackhawks 9).

Saint lost the next match by decison (Tribe 26 Blackhawks 12)and turned it over the Ray Farnsworth. Ray bumped up weigth class to hold off the Blackhawk mounting challenge. Ray won a decision 6-1. (Tribe 29 Blackhawks 12).

Saint lost the next two weight classes and the Blackhawks score went to 24. (Tribe 29 Blackhawks 24) Three matches to go. Things were getting tight.

Alex Pollard halted the Blackhawk momentum briefly with a major decision. This left the Tribe with a 31-24 lead with two matches to go. Just a 7 point lead. We had to win one of the next two matches to close out the team win.

Saint took a major decision lost in the next weigh class which brought the Blackhawk home town crowd to their feet. Tribe 31 Blackhawks 29, just a 2 point lead with one match to go.

The Tribe's Jeff Ellis steps to the mat. Jeff, with only one varsity match in his history, winds up with the fate of the night in his hands. A loss here is not just a individual loss, but a loss in the season opener for the Tribe. Jeff took full advantage of the moment and scored two big five point moves in the first peiod to gab a 10-1 lead. Again in the second peiond Jeff scores two takedowns, a 3 point nearfall, and one reversal. The match was ended on a huge techfall victory of 19-4 at the 3:55 mark of the match. (Tribe 36 Blackhawks 29)

Did you every see the episode of the Little Rascals when Alfalfa was shoved through a hedge row of bushes and came out the other side half naked with shreded clothes hanging off of him, and his boxer shorts twisted totally backwards. Well, that's what it felt like.

Gosh, I love this sport. A great season opener team effort for the Tribe.
