Saint gave up 4 pins to the Tigers, and 8 hard fought decisions.  Our young roster fought hard but could not gain command of their matches.

Saint's conference record now drops to 4-1 and we will need to win out to get into the State Dual Playoffs.

Justin Kidd and Darrell Moss kicked in two decisions to hold our lead at 30-24 up through 170.  Freedom pulled up to a 30-27 deficit before the door was shut by 3 pins from Quay Moody, Wanya Rankins, and Logan Locklear to finish the match at 48-27 win.

Saint Wins Over Hickory
Wins the Wilkes Central Duals

The Tribe demonstrated progress this weekend by pulling out big wins against Davie County and North Iredell to win the Wilkes Central Duals. We lost against each of these teams at our Indian Duals in November, each by one point.  Today was a very different story as the Tribe defeated Davie County 54-19 and North Iredell 48-19 in the Championship Final.

In the opening match of the day, Saint had our conference match with Hickory.  We won 84-0.  That boosted the Tribes conference record to 2-0.

I want to congratulate a few of our wrestlers that stepped up this weekend to cover for injured starters.  They demonstrated that they are ready to contribute and be competitive.

Austin Pickard went 3-1 on the day at 113.  He won with a techfall in our big match with Davie, pinned against Eastern Guilford, and fought back to only give up a major decision in the championship match with North Iredell.   Austin is now 5-3 in varsity competition with 2 pins to his credit.

JP Kinson stepped in and captured a pin in the Eastern Guilford match.  This allow the Tribe to rest some injured wrestlers for the championship match with North Iredell.  JP is now 9-2 in varsity competition with 3 pins and 2 majors.

The Tribe has now won 5 Dual Tournament Championships and placed 2nd in one other in this season of competition.

We are now 29-4.

Now all efforts go to winning the conference.

1-7-2014

Saint Wins Conference Opener with Patton

The Tribe opened up the conference season with a win at Patton on Tuesday night.  Our overall record is now 25-4, 1-0 in conference.

Juan Loredo started the match at 132 and showed true grit late in the third period.  Juan was trapped in a pinning combination and loosing 5-4 when he fought off his back for a reversal to win the match 6-5.

Chris Hunt and Zach Fincannon followed up with pins to push our score out to 15-4.

Tucker Justice held the line for the Tribe at 160.  He could have fallen big against the 10th ranked Thomas Singley, but he fought off all pinning attempts by his opponent and lost 0-6.  This was big in match because it kept Patton's scoring down to 7 points against our 15.

Darrell Moss fought out a 9-4 decision at 182 to set the team score to 18-13.  This was a great contribution by Darrell because he had to be bumped up a weight class.  Our usual starter at 182 came down with bojangleitis before weigh in.

It was up to Quay Moody at 195 to hold the line for the Tribe as he took on #11th ranked Chance Carswell.  Quay was down 1-4 at the end of the first period and took down in the second.  Quay fought out from bottom to flip a reversal and caught his opponent for a pin at 3:23 in the match.  This provided a huge point swing in the match for the Tribe.

Wanya Rankins followed up Moody's win with a pin at 220.

Freshman Tore Ledford stepped in the lineup tonight at 106 to grab a pin at 1:39 in the first period. Tore is now 4-1 on the season.

Zack Berkey finished the scoring with a first period pin in the 126 match.  This closed the match with a 54-16 win for the Tribe.

Saint Wins the 42nd Annual Indian Classic

The Indian Classic is the longest running single day tournament in the state of North Carolina.  The 42nd Annual event was won by the Tribe with an impressive 40.5 lead over the second place finisher East Burke.

The Tribe trailed throughout the day, hanging in around third place.  Only three individuals were left in the championship bracket after the Semi-Final round.  A team meeting at the mid-tournament break refocused the remaining eight wrestlers.  All eight made it to the consolation finals.  Their efforts pulled the team ahead of the field of 11 teams to claim the tournament championship.

Saint Wins Over Maiden

The Tribe won its eighth dual match of the year in a 52-18 win over Maiden.  Saint wrestler’s early pins set the table to win the match early in the lineup.  Juan Loredo @ 138 pinned his opponent at the 1:19 mark to give the Tribe a 34-6 lead.  The forfeit to Chris Hunt @ 145 insured the match win for the Tribe 40-6, with 6 matches to be contested.

Zack Fincannon won a highly contested match with Gage Isaac of Maiden. Zack scored two takedowns and two escapes to seal the win 6-2.  It was a great match to watch given the high degree of athleticism demonstrated by both wrestlers.

The Tribe collected pins tonight from Tyler Walling, Dakota Griffith, Justin Kidd, Juan Loredo, and Quay Moody.

Wanya Rankins @ 220 gave the crowd one more memory for this year’s team.  In the last match of the night, Wanya and Tristian Childers battled neck and neck trading out the lead for the match. They were tied 2-2 at the end of the second period. Childers had a takedown, but Wanya had two escapes.  The third period was a continuous reversal process with both wrestlers reversing each other twice.  The score was tied 6-6 with Wanya on top, minutes now down to seconds on the clock.  Childers scores an escape to go up 6-7 with less than 20 seconds left on the clock.  Wanya goes into attack mode for the takedown, no options left,, Sophomoreseconds on the clock. “Booya!!!!”, Wanya hits a slide by to get behind his opponent and scored the takedown.  Match ends 8-7.

We also had some great winning efforts by our JVs in the preliminary matches. Tore Ledford, Austin Pickard, Jontae Fant and JP Kinson all scored pins.

Tribe Wins Three at Indian Duals

Fincannon Breaks 100 Career Wins

Griffith Pins for 50th Career Win

It was a night of tough competition and our young Tribe showed that they were not going to give in.  Saint won 3 of their 5 matches.

The first loss of the night was a close match with North Iredell 34-33.  The second loss of the night was with Davie County.  The score was tied at the end of 14 matches 34-34.  Davie gained the win by criteria due to the fact that they won more matches 8-6.  Saint 34 Davie County 35.

Taking a 2-2 record into the final match of the night and being beaten by 1 point in each loss, the Tribe was more than ever determined to finish with a winning night against Glenn.  This contest came down to the last two weight classes filled by Shyheim Huitt @ 195 and Wanya Rankins @ 220.  At the end of, Seniormatches, with two to go, the Tribe was down 27-30.  Shyheim pinned in the second period to put the Tribe ahead of Glenn 33-30.  It was up to Wanya to close out the match. Wanya was down 2-4 in the second period.  The Glenn wrestlers were loudly chanting for their wrestler.  A major decision or pin at 220 would clench the match for Glenn.  Then out of nowhere, the Saint Crowd finally showed the old time spirit which use to roar throughout all of our matches.  The chant of “BEEF””BEEF””BEEF” filled the gym.  It was not the friendly name we call Wayna, “Beefy”.  It was the bull name of our sophomore “BEEF”.  Wanya responded to the intensity of the Saint crowd.  He attacked and scored a takedown and immediately stuck in a half nelson and pinned his opponent. Saint 39 Glenn 30.

HOLD ON!  The scoring had not finalized.  When the referee slapped the mat, a wave of Saint Wrestlers stormed the mat to celebrate “BEEF’s” big win.  Lead by a crazed unnamed 7th grader, the wave of celebration could hardly be contained. Only problem is, you can’t do that.  Saint was given a one point penalty for rushing the mat.  Saint 38 Glenn 30.

Saint’s dual record is now 7-2.  Maiden will be our next opponent on Tuesday, Dec. 3rd, 2013 at home.  Please see schedule.

Our thanks to all that attended and we hope to see you next year for our 3rd Annual Honey Badger “Crown of the Beast” tournament.

We will be going through some transition on our website on several pages.  Some links may not work properly.  We apologize for the upcoming delays.
