Season Winds Down

The last of the season has not graced the Tribe with a lot of fortune as a team. We finished 4th at the Conference Tournament. We lost in the first round of the State Duals to North Iredell 42-30. Both were not characteristic of our wrestling tradition at Saint. A LOT of work in the spring club wrestling season is the only cure to improve our outcome for next year's team.

A few good news items to report about a couple of wrestlers here at the end of the dual team season.

Congratulations to the following Saint Wrestlers

It will be held at Freedom High School in Morganton. The top four placers in each weight class will move on to the State Championships the following week.

On March 10th, 2012, Saint Wrestling Club will host our annual Freestyle tournament. We are looking forward to our returning wrestlers working with the club and wrestling this spring. Saint Downs Hibriten 59-16

Senior Night turned out right for our four seniors. All recorded a win one way or the other. The win pushed Saint out to a 5-1 conference record for the year and a 26-7 season record.

Bradley Bader pinned at 1:50 in the first period. This was Bradley 67th career pin for the Tribe.

Hunter Schronce fought through a tough 8-7 match. He finally gained total control in the third period and pinned at 4:39 in the third period.

Ian Martin, who now holds the career and single season record for nearfall points, continued stretching his records out with a 16-1 techfall.

Dale Huffman was given a night off as he was given a forfeit. Obviously, on one wanted to be subjected to the "twisting" move that Dale has perfected this year.

So all the personal pressure was off for each senior to win on Senior Night and everyone was happy.

But the match of the night came from out of nowhere. Cody Yelton with a 12-26 record pulled off a huge upset in the 182 lb. match against a fully loaded 23-8 opponent. This match was incredible! Cody has fought hard all year, but just could not every catch a break in his matches. Tonight was the night that all his hard work and daily work out dedication paid off. It made Senior Night special.

Cody was down 0-5 in the first period and fighting off his back. He gained a reversal an captured a 3-point nearfall. His opponent gained and escape and took Cody down to close the 1st period with a 5-8 lead. A lot of physical energy was spent by both wrestlers in this period. You could see tirednest setting in for both.

Cody's opponent chose neutral to start the second period. Well, low and behold, Cody gets the takedown and rides out the period to close the score to 7-8 in the second period.

Cody chose down in the 3rd. He had to score from bottom to stay in this match. He did just that with an escape and tied the match. THE RACE ON THE CLOCK WAS ON!!! Takedowns were critical. Cody got another takedown 10-8,(tick-tick-tick), his opponent gained a reversal 10-10, (tick-slowdown clock-tick-slowdown), but Cody reverses him again 12-10, (tick-hurry clock-tick-hurry), Cody puts him on his back 15-10, (tick-hurry up clock-hurry-hurry-hurry-tick).

FINALLY - BUZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

Cody has just pulled off the biggest upset of his career. 15-10. What a great finish!!!! Everyone in the crowd that has followed the Tribe all season was screaming for Cody. They know it has been a tough year for him. Everyone was happy for Cody, the fans, the team, the coaching staff. What a way to end the conference season. What a geat memory for Senior Night 2012.

Congratulation to Cody Yelton for a Tremendous Effort and Win.

If you go to the Motel Reservation Information at the top of the page, you can see the hotel locations for the Regional and the State Championships.

Saint Defeats Bunker Hill 47-24

Saint came out of the match with 4 pins from Justin Kidd, Hunter Schronce, Ian Marting, and Matt Baker.

Justin Kidd @120 had the best comeback of the night with a third period pin. Justin had been battling from bottom and was down 10-5. He had fought out of 4 pinning combination and had to the down position at the start of the third. It was a struggle for one minute in the third for Justin to get any opening at an opportunity to change his fortunes. With one minute left in the match, Justin gained a reversal and placed his opponent in pinning combination. It worked and Justin came away with the win. Congratulations to Justin for keeping up the fight and gaining success at the end of the match.

Another bright spot of the night was the performace of Logan Locklear @ 182. Logan, a first year wrestler for Saint, lost 2-9 in a match against a seasoned wrestler for Bunker Hill. While it was a lost for the team, Logan held the opponent to a decision and only giving up 3 team points. Great job.

Zach Fincannon @ 152 had the test match of the night. Zach had lost to his Bunker Hill opponent just two weekends ago in the Indian Classic. The test was had Zach increased his stammia enough from coming off of football to stay in the rematch. After the first period Zach had a 4-2 advantage. Second period was a standoff with no points scored, but Zach kept his opponent down the entire period. The third period answered the test. Zach took down and got a quick escape and a takedown to surge to a 7-2 lead. He was reversed at the end of the match, but he walked off with a 7-4 victory. Hard work pays off.

Saint Overtakes East Burke 57-18

The Tribe's scoring tonight was led by 6 big pins in the match with East Burke. Matt Baker, Chris Henderson, Bradley Bader, Hunter Schronce Warren Boyett, and Dale Huffman all pinned for the Tribe.

The exciting match of the night came down to the last few seconds of the third peiod. Sophomore Gerson Urbina @ 138 was down 4-5 with just a few seconds to go. Gerson grew up on with his efforts on the mat tonight by overcoming in a difficult situation. Gerson was losing 2-4 at the beginning of the third period. He chose neutral to start the third period. His only chance of a comeback was an agressive takedown attack. With 1:00 left in the final period, Gerson won a takedown for two points to pull even with the score 4-4. East Burke was solid on bottom and could spin down the clock and score a last second escape to take the win from Gerson. Gerson let him go to safe time on the clock for a final scoring attemp, but that gave East Burke a one point lead with time dwindling down. The crowd screaming was on now. Everyone new Gerson had to have the takedown an a controlled ride out to win. 20 seconds to go. Down 4-5.

Our young wrestler. Little mat experience. Agression needed. Time to get physical. Gerson grew up. He relentlessly attached and then out scrambled his opponent for the last takedown of the match. Up 6-5. He rode out the time on the clock by keeping his opponent broke down on the mat. It was a great effort from our young wrestler. Congratulations Gerson.
