Saint Places 5 in the 3A State Individual Championships

Salvador Gilvaja - 195 State 3A Champion
Ivan Vergel - 152 State 3A 2nd Place
Blake Baker - 138 State 3A 4th Place
Graham Ormand - 126 State 3A 5th Place
Jovanny Urzua - 113 State 3A 6th Place

Dakota Metcalf at 182 reinjured his shoulder in a consolation match.  However, his opponent took down in the third period.  His opponent was ahead in points.  Dakota used his remaining energy to power his opponent onto his back for a pin.  This was his last competition match for St. Stephens. Dakota had to withdraw from competition due to shoulder injury. He was there for the Tribe as long as his body was able.  He was a key member of the State 3A Dual Team Championship run of matches. He did not place due to the injury default.

Tariq Shuford at 120 gave it all for the Tribe this season and wrestled several rounds in State tournament before losing out. He was also a key member of the State 3A Dual Team Championship run of matches. His single season at Saint was the highlight of his high school wrestling career. He did not place in the tournament.

This has been a great group of young men.  Along with Jordan Bolling, De'Untae Henry and Daniel Tellez, this group of seniors accomplished magic.  They were the first group to every win a conference championship for the Arndt Middle School and the first group to every win the 3A Dual Team Championship.  They also continued with a 3A West Regional Championship.  They placed 4th in the State 3A Individual Tournament. Just 1 point away from being tie for 3rd place.

Blake Baker surpassed the career wins record held by Drew Forshey since the 2002-2003 season. Drew's record was 215 wins. Blake set the new career wins record at 225.

Salvador Gilvaja surpassed his own single season wins record of 60 by winning 65 matches this year.

Ivan Vergel will move into second place of the single season wins record with 63 win for this year.

There will be a major shifting of the historical records with the success this entire team has accomplished.

Saint Wins 2019 NCHSAA 3A West Regional
Seven Saint Wrestlers are going to the State Championships in Greensboro next week.

Saint wins with an impressive Championship and Consolation Finals Round to capture the 2019  NCHSAA 3A West Regional Championship. The Tribe was down by 20 points to North Henderson at one point of the tournament. But the Tribe kept battling with all 14 wrestlers contributing points through both the Championship and Consolation Brackets. Saint had a 24.5 lead going into the final championship round with exciting 3rd place performances by:

113 Jovanny Urzua (St. Stephens) 48-7, Jr. over Zack Karagias (Cramer) 37-5, Fr. (Dec 3-2). Karagias defeated Jovanny in the championship quarter-finals by a score of 10-1 in Friday night's action. So the rematch in the Consolation Finals was huge upset of Karagias by the determined Jovanny. A great effort to capture 3rd place with a 3-2 decision.

120 Tariq Shuford (St. Stephens) 28-14, Sr. over Chase S Treadway (Alexander Central) 36-13, Sr. (Dec 10-9) was another 4 points swing for the Tribe clinching 3rd Place.

182 Dakota Metcalf (St. Stephens) 23-1, Sr. over Brad Moore (Crest) 39-7, Sr. (Inj. 0:00). Dakota's win gave the Tribe another six point boost for 3rd place.

The stage was set for a North Henderson take over going into the Championship finals.  Saint had 4 in the finals, but North Henderson had 6. If all of North Henderson's wrestlers pin in the finals and our wrestlers loose their matches, North Henderson gains 36 points to overtake the Tribe. North Henderson lost their 106 and 113 finals matches. That took off some of the pressure for the Tribe, but our four seniors in the finals made sure the Tribe clinched to regional championship with stunning performances.

The most excitement from the bench tonight came when two Seniors, Luis Cervantes and Luis Hernandez, got on the mat.  Senior Luis Cervantes @ 160 has been with the team for 4 years, but got into the lineup tonight for the first time and for a 6 point win for the Tribe.  Senior Luis Hernandez @ 285 got his second start ever and brought the crowd to their feet with a thrilling 3:01 pin in the Watauga match.

This demonstrated the attitude and brotherhood this wrestling program generates.  We all play a role and support each other. We recognize individuals constant daily efforts.

This year's team has broken numerous records and still building.

The longest undefeated dual team win streak in school history. Breaking the 2003 record of 32-0. The tribe is now 38-0.

Second largest Dual Team Wins in a Season.  Just one short of the 2018 record of 39-5.

We have 7 wrestlers in the current starting lineup with over 100 career wins.

Blake Baker is just two wins away from matching the career wins leader record of 215 set by our 4 time state champion Drew Forshey in 2003.

This is an exceptional group of Seniors who have lead their Junior, Sophomore, and Freshmen teammates on an incredible journey.

Congratulations to Garrett Bolling
Garrett won his 50th Career Win Milestone Tonight
when he secured a forfeit against Watauga

We are also excited to see the surging Arndt Wrestlers and Wrestling program gaining steam. Under the leadership of Coach Jon Holloway, former Saint Wrestler (2011), the Arndt Team can pull off another middle school conference championship on Thursday night.  They will face off against Newton-Conover at Arndt.  Newton won the first face off by 3 points. Newton lost in another conference match later in the season.  A win by Arndt will put them back into 1st place with only one loss. Saint Claims Two More Conference Wins

The Tribe continued its march to the conference regular season championship with two more wins on Friday at Freedom.

St. Stephens 67 - Freedom 9
St. Stephens 68 - South Caldwell 9
St. Stephens dual record is 31-0 (5-0)

The match of the night was Graham Ormand vs Clay Beech of Freedom. Clay Beech is a top state level wrestler that we have never won against in four years.  The match against our Graham Ormand started off as expected with Beech getting the take down in the first period.  Beech's efforts to pin Graham was fought off until late in the period with the unexpected occurred. Graham reversed Beech late in the first period to tie the score 2-2.  Graham, with such a brave little heart, took down in the second period. (What was he thinking letting the Beast of Burke County get back on top to twist our Grammy's neck into a ballpark pretzel?). Graham worked every angle from bottom. Four years of this madness without success. Was this just another year where Alfie doesn't get his Red Rider BB Rifle? Will we have to eat Chinese Turkey again? No-o-o-o. Graham turns into a slinky slug of slippery snot and slithers out an escape to take the lead at 3-2 at the end of the second period!! Up by one. One period to go. Beech takes down to start the third. Whistle blows. Graham clamps down on Beech. Let the rodeo begin!!!  Beech moved in all directions. Graham followed and countered his every move. (Good grief how long will this period go on. Darn only 10 seconds has gone by.) Graham clamps down during all this motion like a warning flag on the back of construction truck. Beech can't get away! TIME RUNS OUT!!! Graham Wins 3-2!!! Finally, Graham gets to spit out that bar of Lifebuoy soap and taste the sweet taste of victory.  Great Job Graham!!!! Fra Ra Ra Ra Ra aa Ra Ra Ra.

Yes, it was a great victory. Well deserved after years of hard work and practice.

The Tribe varsity takes a break from conference action this Saturday to wrestle non-conference teams at AL Brown. The JV's are scheduled to be in action as well at at JV tournament and being led by our great heavy weight coach Eric Isenhour.  I just hope they can get away from McDonalds in time to make weigh in.

Many of you alumni wrestlers participated in our Little Indian tournament that we have held for 31 years.  We had a great one this Saturday with 327 wrestlers from 14 teams.  Results will be posted on our Arndt link on our website later this week.

A BIG Thank You to the Arndt parents and Saint Parents (current and past) that made the Little Indian a great success. Their effort shows how to support a full middle/high school wrestling program.

Saint's Bonus Points Over Takes Newton Conover 33-26

The bout wins were even tonight as two county rivals toed the line tonight. Both won seven matches.  In the end, Saint handed Newton Conover its first loss of the season. Saint's ability to score bonus points with major decisions, tech-falls, and pins put the Tribe on top.

Newton pushed out to a 0-11 lead before the Tribe was able to put points on the board.  Graham Ormand and Blake Baker pull the Tribe even 11-11 after five matches. De'Untae Henry won a decision with a last second takedown to grab a 8-6 win. Ivan Vergel tech-falled his opponent to put the Tribe into a 19-14 lead. Justin Beltran controlled his match with a 4-1 decision to keep the Tribe ahead 22-17.

Dakota Metcalf joined the starting line up tonight for the first time this year. His 0:23 first period pin ignited the crowd as they could see our lead growing and a win just within reach. Salvador Gilvaja sealed the match with a 19-1 techfall which gave the Tribe a 16 point lead with only two matches to go.

Everyone did their part. Our guys that lost their matches held Newton to minimum bonus points.  A total team effort by all. Thank you to all the alumni wrestlers and parents who came in tonight to support our team.  This was the biggest home crowd support we have had all season.  It was great to hear the ROAR of the Saint crowd on our wins and critiquing the officials calls. It was like old times again. Please tell your former teammates and parents about our team. Thank you. Please come back next Wednesday as we take on Fred T. Foard and West Forsyth.

Saint Starts Season 2-0

The Tribe got off to a great start Thursday night with two wins, including a significant win over Davie County. The Davie County match showed the stamina of our younger wrestlers as fought off potential pins and kept the Tribe in the match until the end. A great entire team effort.

Highlight of the night was a huge point swing in the Davie match when our heavy weight Ryan Campbell pinned his opponent. That was a huge 12 point swing that ended up being the final point spread in the match.

Another unexpected performance was turned in by Freshman Braxton Hankinson. Soaking wet at 100 pounds, Braxton fought off a more experienced wrestler and only gave up a decision.

Pinning tonight in the Davie match was Blake Baker, Ivan Vergel, Jordan Bolling, Justin Beltran, and Ryan Campbell.
