No Placers at the State Tournament

Saint was not able to get a wrestler to the medal rounds of this years tournament.  It has been a good year for us team wise with a 30-5 record. Our focus now is to get a good summer in with club activities and competition.

Best wishes to our seniors Andre Britt, Jacob Schwartz, Evan Trossi, Kymani Evans, and Evan Vue as they proceed to graduation.

Saint Out Last Ranked #8 3A West Rowan in a 33-27 Brawl

Hello Saint Wrestling Fans. This is Saint Wrestling Radio signing on.  Check! Check! Check! Nancy turn the vacuum cleaner off so we can get more power to the transmitter.

Check! Yes! That's better!!  Dang that Dyson sucks up a lot of power. Wow! What a night of wrestling for the Tribe!!!!  If you were there, you are probably reading this from the Cardiac Ward at the Catawba Medical Center.  If you missed it, you probably don't have a life anyway.

The Tribe's Team Effort was shocking.  It takes the whole picture to appreciate the entirety of the effort that took place tonight.

The match was held at Arndt Middle School. Why? I don't know. I think it's because they WON'T build us a WRESTLING ARENA at the high school.  But that's another subject.

The match started out slowly for the Tribe. Like pouring molasses - outside - in the dead of winter. But like thick molasses, every one of our wrestlers stuck to their job and did their part and their best to keep us in the match.

Isaac Burgin at 182 fought valiantly and only gave a 3 point lost to West Rowan. Andre Britt pinned at 195 (SS 6 - WR 3). Luke Apollonio at 220 got caught in a pining combination and Evan Vue hung on to a 1-7 loss at 285 to keep the score at SS 6 - WR 12.  Alec Petty at 106 and Logan Laws at 113 hung tough on losses but only gave up 3 point each the West Rowan. (SS 6 WR 18)

Cesar Chavez grappled to a 3 point decision at 120 bringing the Tribe back to (SS 9 WR 18). Everyone was wrestling hard, but we were not getting the breaks to climb back on top. Ryan Brown and Will Moore lost by a pin and a decision.  West Rowan broke out to a (SS 9 WR 27) lead.  It was not looking good for the red and gray. Only five matches to go and a long way to get there.

Seniors Evan Trossi and Kymani Evans won by decisions to get the Tribe 6 points and pulled the Tribe back to (SS 15 - WR 27).

With only 3 matches to go, down by 12, the Tribe needed to win all of them and in a big way. Freshman Will Fincher at 152 goes out and gets a 2nd period pin to pull up the Tribe, (SS 21 WR 27).

Senior Jacob Schwartz at 160 powers to a 5-0 lead and then catches his opponent for a 1st period pin. (SS 27 WR 27)

One match to go and it's Andrew Kehoe for the Tribe. This is why Mothers hate wrestling, Her little boy with it all resting on his shoulders and her heart.

The whistle blows and BAM. Andrew is hit in a head lock and on his back in the first 10 seconds. He's fighting, fighting, fighting. Run Clock Run!! Dang, 1:45 left in the first.  All is lost.

What's this! Andrew fights off his back and Wham-o he is hit in a Banana Split.  That looks like that would hurt.  Oh well, it was a good try. What! Kehoe is out!! But wait. Now he is caught in a cradle!!!!  Kehoe is down 0-5, in a cradle, and it is only 1:12 into the first period. How long can this go on? Well Tribe fans, it only lasted another 15 seconds.  In the biggest display of determination I have seen since the miraculous Blake Baker win in the 3A West Regional, Kehoe fought out of the cradle and pinned his opponent to win the match. (SS 33 WR 27).

It was "Chaos at Arndt". Saint fans were shouting and Mom was shedding tears of relief.  Dad's chest was pumped up as a toad that Shrek just blew up for Princess Fiona. Hugs and love all around.

The Tribe is now 18-2. We travel to Bunker Hill next Tuesday.

Saint Wrestling Radio is signing off!! (Ok Nancy, you can vacuum now)

Wait! Wait! Wait!  I have more Breaking News!!

Congratulations to Andre Britt

Andre won his 100th Career Wins Milestone

The win came tonight at the West Rowan match with a 1:50 pin over his opponent.

Congratulations to Andrew Kehoe

Andrew won his 25th Career Wins Milestone

 Dual

Saint Has Come From Behind Win Against Bandys

Saint came from 0-21 deficit to overtake Bandys for a  39-31 win. This was a total effort by the team and by the fan support in the stands.  It took the entire village to pull this out for a victory. We had the loudest team support tonight that we have not had for several years. This was a SAINT NATION win.

The match started out bad for the Tribe. The Bandy's hammers jumped them off to a 0-21 lead after 4 matches. It was not looking good for the Tribe. Then Andrew Kehoe score the first team points for the Tribe winning a tough 6-3 match. (3-21). Andre Britt followed up with a pin. (9-21). The Tribe had to stop the bleeding of big points to Bandys. Luke Apollonio fought off the Bandys wrestler and only allowed 4 team points to Bandys (9- 25). Vastly improved Kassen Turner lost a 0-1 match which gave Bandys a lead of (9-28). Evan Vue pins for the Tribe at heavy weight. (15-28). We are running out of weights to close the gap with small wins.  We needed the TEAM effort. Alec Petty pins to give us 6 more points. (21-28). Bandys had no one at 113. We did! Our 113 Logan Laws makes weight, wins by forfeit. (27-28). Bandys 120 fails weigh in. We didn't. Sebastian Lopez-Santos makes weight and takes the forfeit (33-28) Cesar Chavez-Alonzo bumps up a weight class had hold off Bandy's scoring by a 4-6 loss and only giving Bandys 3 team points. (33-31).

With only a 2 point lead, the fate of the Tribe tonight was resting on our Will Moore.  The entire gym was rocking. Our bench was chanting "Let's Go Will!". The Bandys fans and team exploded with their chant for their wrestler. The Tribe fans fired back louder with "Let's Go Will!". The first period had shots and scrambles by both wrestlers, but ended with no first period score. Will took bottom in the 2nd period and finally scored an escape. 1-0 for Will. Bandys took bottom in the 3rd period. All they needed was a reversal to win the bout and the match. The flurry of moves and scrambles was intense. But Will rode the Bandys wrestler for 1 minute and 11 seconds. And Then! And Then! ac-ac-ac! Will twisted his opponent on his back and stuck him for the MATCH WINNING PIN! 39 - 31 FINAL.  Everyone was involved. Total Team-Total Fans-Total Scorekeepers-Total Coaching Staff. It all counts.

Saint is now 8-0 and heading to Mallard Creek tomorrow for a 4 match dual team tournament. Why don't you join us?

Shout Out to our JV wrestlers. We had 10 preliminary matches last night at Bandys. We won 7 of those matches.

Tribe Wins Two Duals at Maiden

The Tribe kickoff the 2021-2022 season with a line up of 4 Seniors, 4 Juniors, 3 Sophomores, and 3 Freshmen.  With 6 out of 14 with none to little varsity experience, it was questionable as to the overall competitiveness of the overall team. The team proved they were up to the early season challenge with two dominating wins.  Saint 66 Cherryville 6 and Saint 70 Maiden 6.

In the Cherryville match the Tribe scored 7 pins by Alec Petty, Logan Laws, Cesar Chavez-Alonzo, Ryan Brown, Evan Trossi, William Fincher, and Evan Vue.

Kyler Milligan won a close 6-5 decision with a takedown with only seconds left in the 3rd period.  Jacob Schwartz won 9-2, Andrew Kehoe won 6-4, and Andre Britt won 8-2.

The Tribe rolled on in the Maiden match with pins from Alec Petty, Logan Laws, Cesar Chavez Alonzo, Yoabdriel Ortiz, Evan Trossi, Luke Apollonio, and Evan Vue.  Andrew Kehoe won a major decision with a 10-0 score.

Special Shout Out to Our Preliminary Wrestlers: Yoabdriel Ortiz, Will Moore, TJ Ledford, Ivan Cortez, Connor Hefner, Juan Orozco, Daniel Lowder. Everyone of them won their preliminary matches. Their efforts started us off and got the team bench jacked up for the night of wrestling. Congratulation to all of these wrestlers.
